What is Monkey Bread?
Monkey bread has also been called monkey puzzle bread, monkey brains, sticky bread, and funky bread. It is a soft sticky pastry that is served in the U.S. as a breakfast item or treat. The monkey bread is typically made with pieces of sweet yeast dough which is baked in a cake pan after being covered with melted butter, cinnamon, sugar, and chopped pecans.
This American version combines canned cinnamon rolls with fresh fruit making it a perfect 4th of July breakfast. I also have a Reese’s monkey bread version that uses flaky biscuits, cinnamon sugar and mini Reese’s. Monkey bread is a pretty versatile recipe and almost fail-proof.
The name monkey bread originated because this pastry is a finger food that you have to pick apart just as a monkey does when they eat.
This recipe is made with cinnamon rolls to make it easier, and instead of pecans, fruit is added for a fun twist.

How to Store Leftovers
Just because the interior of monkey bread stays moist longer than regular bread doesn’t mean you don’t want to store it properly.
NEVER store your monkey bread in the refrigerator. During cold (not frozen) storage, the starch reverts to its crystalline stage making the bread stale and hard.
The best way to store your monkey bread is at room temperature. Store it in a plastic ziplock bag out of direct sunlight. The bag will minimize moisture loss and keep the bread soft and supple for about 2 days.
Can I Freeze Monkey Bread?
Yes, you can store your monkey bread in the freezer. In fact, freezer storage gives it the most longevity and freshness and stops staleness. However, you do not want to thaw it and refreeze it. Only freeze monkey bread 1 time!
To store your monkey bread in the freezer, cut it into pieces and wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. Then, place it in a freezer bag. You can store it in the freezer for up to a month.
