When you wake up in the morning and are craving something sweet and delicious, you make these blueberry danishes. You can enjoy these danishes at any time of the day, although we enjoy having them for breakfast! Do you enjoy a good cream cheese danish? If so, you are going to really love these.
I think a fresh blueberry danish is that ideal breakfast to have for special occasions. However, it’s also totally appropriate to enjoy on a Tuesday. Danishes have always been something the kids have asked for, so I just got used to making them.
There is no doubt that you will get a flaky and creamy danish out of the recipe that I’m sharing today! While some people may view danishes as impossible to make, I’m always up for the challenge. I always say that you just need a good recipe to help get you through. Once you take the first bite of this blueberry cream cheese danish, you will be in danish heaven!
What is Blueberry Danish?
Before you make this delicious breakfast, you may be wondering what exactly it is. When it comes down to it, a danish is just a mixture of ingredients you already have in your home. You will use puff pastry, milk, eggs, and lots of butter! I would also describe the dough as being flaky, yet very soft and sweet. You’ll really enjoy all of the yummy layers in this breakfast dessert.
Traditionally danishes are multi layer, sweet pastries with many flavor varieties. This blueberry variety uses puff pastry instead of homemade dough but it’s hard to tell the difference.
These are very similar to my Starbucks cream cheese danishes but with fresh blueberries and an icing drizzle.
Blueberry Cream Cheese Danish Ingredients
If you are going to enjoy a scrumptious danish, you may be wondering what is in them. All of the ingredients can easily be found at your local grocery store.
- Puff pastry
- Cream cheese
- Sugar
- Vanilla
- Fresh blueberries
- Eggs
- Lemon juice
Puff pastry – You can easily buy puff pastry at the store in the freezer section. I like to stock up when they are on sale and freeze them for later. Puff pastry can be used to make danishes, but you can also use them for a lot of other sweet dessert type recipes. Using the boxed puff pastry will save you loads of time but you could also try and make your own too.
Cream cheese – When it comes to cream cheese, you have lots of options at the store. I always try and go with the off-brand when it’s on sale because it’s so much cheaper. It’s also a good buy to stock up on and freeze for later.
Sugar – I am using plain granulated sugar in this recipe, but you can play with it and add a sugar substitute if you want. Stevia may be a great option if you’re trying to lower the amount of sugar you’re consuming.
Blueberries – You can also use fresh or frozen blueberries in this recipe. I always buy blueberries on sale and then freeze them for when I want to make a dessert or sweeter breakfast. Although, for best results, use fresh blueberries.
Can Danishes Be Frozen?
Yes! Blueberry danishes can be frozen. In order to do this, you are going to place them on a cookie sheet once they have cooled. Stick them in the freezer for a few hours to freeze completely. Remove, place in a ziplock baggy and back in the freezer they go.
To re-heat simply bake them for 3-5 minutes in a 350 degree oven or pop them in the microwave for a minute.
How Do You Store Cheese Danishes?
These make for an excellent make-ahead breakfast idea. You will want to store them in the fridge in an airtight container to keep them from going back. Any time you use dairy in a recipe, you need to store it in the fridge.

After you gather all your ingredients, you will also need to grab:
- cutting board
- knife, fork, spoon
- cookie sheet
- 3 small mixing bowls
- whisk
- measuring cup
- pastry brush
- wire cooling rack
Start by pre-heating the oven to 400 degrees.
Roll out the pastry dough onto a lightly floured surface or a cutting board. Using the fold marks as a guide, cut the sheets into 3 rectangles with the knife. Cut each strip in half on both pastry sheets to create a total of 12 rectangles.
Place the puff pastry pieces on an ungreased cookie sheet. With the knife, score a border around each pastry about 3/4 inch away from the edge as a guideline to place the filling. Poke the pastry with a fork.
In one of the small mixing bowls, combine the softened cream cheese, 2 tablespoons of sugar and the vanilla extract. Stir it until smooth. Place it in the scored rectangle of the puff pastry.
In another small bowl mix together the blueberries, lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Lay the sugared blueberries over the cream cheese mixture on the puff pastry.
Make an egg wash by combining the egg and water together. Use a pastry brush to baste the outside edge of the danishes with the egg wash. This step is optional but creates a nice crispy edge to the danishes.
Bake for 18 minutes in a 400 degree oven or until the edges of the danishes are golden brown.
While your danishes are baking, whisk together the powdered sugar and the heavy cream to make the frosting. It should be thick but not too thick that it won’t drizzle off a spoon. If it’s too thick, add a bit more heavy cream until you reach a consistency you like.
Remove the danishes from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes on baking rack. Drizzle the frosting over the cooled danishes and enjoy!
Easy blueberry danish recipe:
Blueberry danishes
These blueberry danishes are pretty simple to make. Puff pastry creates a delicious, buttery, and crisp base for the sweetened cream cheese and sugared blueberries. The finished pastries are then drizzled with frosting
Ingredients
- 17.3 ounce box puff pastry (two sheets of pastry in the box), thawed according to package directions
- 6 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
- 3 tablespoons sugar, divided
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- ½ teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- Frosting:
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400 F degrees.
2. Unfold the puff pastry sheets and lay out on a flat surface. Use a knife to cut along the fold marks to create three equal sized strips. Cut each strip in half to make a total of 12 rectangles.
3. Arrange the puff pastry rectangles on a large, ungreased cookie sheet leaving at least 1 inch of space between each rectangle.
4. With aparing knife, lightly score a border around the entire edge of each pastry rectangle, about ¾inch away from the edge. Use a fork to poke a few holes into the center area of each pastry. This allows the outside border to rise and puff up while the center stays lowerand holds the filling.
5. In a small bowl, combine the cream cheese, 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and the vanilla extract.Spoon equal amounts of the filling into the center of each pastry rectangle. Spread it onto the dough within the inside border.
6. In a small bowl, toss the fresh blueberries with the lemon juice, then sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Add the sugared blueberrieson top of the cream cheese on the pastries.
7. In a small bowl, beat the egg and water together. Use a pastry brush toapply a thin layer of the egg wash to the outside border of each pastry. Discard any leftover egg mixture.
8. Bake the pastries at 400 F for 18 minutes, until the danishes are golden brown.
9. In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar and heavy cream (milk can be substituted for cream, but will make the frosting thinner). The consistency should be somewhat thick, but still thin enough to drizzle. If the consistency is too thick, add a little more cream; if too thin, add more powdered sugar.
10. Cool the danishes on a baking rack for 10 minutes. Drizzle the frosting over the danishes.
