One thing I miss about living up north are the changes in seasons. Winter to spring, summer to fall. I loved watching the leaves change colors and feeling the weather cool down. We also spent a lot of time outside running through the leaves and snow. [Well, not really running. More of a slow jog.] So when we went to Michigan last week I knew I wanted to take the kids to the apple orchard we always visited. They had so much fun and we came home with a bunch of delicious farm fresh apples to make easy homemade recipes with. My mother in law made an old fashioned apple betty and I knew I had to share it.
My mother in law kept calling this recipe a ‘poor man’s apple pie’ but there was nothing poor about this recipe! The apples were covered in brown sugar and sweet, the bread crumbs were crisp and delicious. And its so easy to make. [I saw this objectively because she made it, I just watched her and photographed the result. Oh and I ate a whole bunch of it too.]
To make your own you old fashioned apple betty you need:
- Apples
- Butter
- Brown Sugar
- Bread Crumbs
Chop your apples and layer them in bottom of a cake pan. Add slices of butter and brown sugar to the apples. Top with bread crumbs. Repeat to make a second layer. Bake at 350 for 35 minutes, covered in foil. Remove foil and bake for another 10 minutes. Remove and serve with cool whip or ice cream.
The perfect recipe for a cool fall day. Or any day really. The thing about this recipe that I love is that you don’t have to buy anything special to make it. Heck, you can even use day old bread for the crumbs. Its a low key dessert [or breakfast. No judging.] that is big on flavor.

Most recipes have amounts to use, this does not. I am an old cook so I can guess it, but for some you need the amounts or they will pass right over it, a shame because I’m sure it’s good.

Hey Lynda. I apologize. I watched my mother in law make this recipe and haven’t made it myself. She made it in a 9×12 pan so my guess would be 4 or 5 apples, half a loaf of bread, a cup of butter and a cup of brown sugar. Hope that helps!

The picture plainly shows a delicious looking crust, NOT bread crumbs. Why does the recipe not match the picture?
Kelley says
Yea, those are bread crumbs. Delicious looking bread crumbs. Enjoy!

Kelly-nothing measured?

I apologize. Like I stated in the post, it was my mother in law who made the recipe so I didn’t get specific amounts of each item. She made it in a 9×12 pan so my guess would be 4 or 5 apples, half a loaf of bread, a cup of butter and a cup of brown sugar. Hope that helps. -Kelley
