I love making birthdays special for the kids, right down to their outfits. I knew I was on a strict budget for the party and that included the birthday outfit. I had to think of something that was cute and festive for her big day. So I whipped together this easy homemade birthday outfit for my little lady!
Birthday Outfit Supplies:
Plain white tee
Fabric paint
Tulle
Elastic band
Needle and thread
The shirt was the harder of the two pieces. I won a Silhouette Cameo two months ago and had yet to use it.. but I was determined to fire it up and create a fun shirt for my Roo. Sounds easy, right? Well of course its not easy.. Im the one running the show. I take the path of most resistance.
I didnt have wax paper.. or transfer paper or any other paper that would be recommended for this project. I used freezer paper. Its paper.. itll all work out. Ha! It stuck to the mat and torn in some spots. I wasnt extremely happy with it but I wasnt running to the store at midnight either.
I used the phrase ‘Ryley Roo is TWO!’ and choose a big enough font that you would be able to read it. I taped down the torn freezer paper and patted the paint over it.
Ryley Roo in her shirt blowing out her candle. You can read it.. so Im happy.
Now the skirt was the fun part. I enjoy making tutus for Ryley.. mostly because she loves to wear them. If she sees a tutu in her closet she will grab it and say ‘dance dance dance!’ until I help her put it on. The one she was wearing for the party was from Halloween but I added extra fluff.
Which is a big ball by her bed. She destroyed her blue tutu.. so I made her another one!
I had all the supplies on hand. Ive had that big bolt of tulle since Christmas. I love when Hobby Lobby puts their holiday stuff on clearance. Im the crazy woman that rushes out and buys it all up. Thank you very much!
Measure your daughters waist and then take off an inch or two. The elastic stretches after being worn a few times. Sew the ends together or hot glue them. Or both.
The easiest way to make your tulle the same length is to wrap it around something and then cut it all at once. I used a cereal box and the length came out perfect for Ryley. If you think your done wrapping.. go around at least 10 more times. You need alot of tulle pieces.
Cut it all at once on one side. Easy.
Take the tulle and fold it in half. Make a loop using the middle part and stick it under the elastic. Pull the ends through and tighten.
The tighter you pull the pieces together the fuller your tutu. And the longer it takes to make. This one only took me about an hour.. and most of that was wrapping and cutting the pieces. And attending to two kids. Ya know.. normal mom stuff.
You start to get in a rhythm after awhile. I was making this thinking ‘loop, swoop, pull’ and laughing (to myself of course) but thats really what you do. Loop it under, swoop the two pieces through and pull to tighten. Keep going until you’ve covered your elastic band.
Ta-da! The final fluffy product. The tutu is standing on it own.. thats how much tulle I used. I like a big, full skirt.
Ryley Roo loved her new skirt. She danced around the house and laughed. It was so sweet. And I couldnt get any good pictures. So I sat her on the couch and asked her to smile. Winner!
Just a girl and her tutu.

Hi Kelley (with an extra “e”)! Thanks for sharing how to make that darling tutu. My 3-year old grand daughter loves to wear them to “top off” almost every kind of outfit. Now I know how to add to her collection. I saw your post over at Weekend Wrap Up Party.

Cameroon has the support of the united nations. It is not his war as u put it but a bit to stop Gadaffi slaughtering his own people. Along with that the Un has the support of Arab nations. In other words you talk crap.

I live in Hayward CA and I need a slammin outfit for my birthday, I'm full figured so of coarse the outfit I would have in mind I would not be able to find in the local stores. So I'm looking for a seamstress that can take my vision and make it a sexy reality.

I don't want to be mean. But I wouldn't go all out with a BOOM on your birthday. You see, I would make it a huge bash like this for you're 13th birthday.

I bought them some new outfits at the Salvation Army but that is really all I can do. We will have a homemade cake but I feel so sad that we can't even afford decorations for their 1st birthday! I feel like such a failure as a mother.
