Our question this week is:
How do you keep your baby/toddler entertained?
Mommy: Rachel
My favorite non-toy entertainment for a mobile baby/tot is tupperware and metal pots and lids on the kitchen floor. Especially while I’m busy in the kitchen so I can keep an eye on her…add a wooden spoon or two and she is very occupied!
Mommy: Brittney
Everything and anything!! I have a 22 month old right now and she is VERY busy. Books, coloring, tv/movies, hide-n-seek, play outside, and ESPECIALLY stickers. She LOVES stickers. We also have an old school light bright (probably 30 years old) and she loves to stick the pegs in the holes. She’s always loved little detailed things. I have also given her some uncooked pinto and navy beans to play with lately. We pour them into a few bowls and then give her a measuring spoon.
Basically I look around the house and try to find anything that might capture her attention for a little bit. She’s at an age when she loves to mimic, so when I clean bathrooms, I give her a rag; when we vacuum, she pretends her walker is a vacuum; and if we are using tools on something, we give her some of her own. She LOVES to copy what we do.
Mommy: Cori
Since the weather has been so nice we have been outside all the time! My little man loves water and rocks! I have been filling a couple buckets with water, giving him some spoons and rocks and he has been entertained for atleast an hour!
Mommy: Karen
He loves to “help” with anything I am doing, especially laundry. He also loves sweeping. Anything that is scoop-able, pourable, spread-able will keep him busy for some time, as will time at the sink with just a trickle of water. He likes to do puzzles and to play musical instruments with his father or I. There is not much much he wants to do on his own, but that’s okay (most of the time!)
Mommy: Tricia
At home: Bubble machine, sandbox, tents, tunnels, water table, books (my 18 month-old is especially into lift-the-flap books!), baby dolls, musical instruments, small photo albums with family member pictures, balloons, 30 minute educational DVDs when all else fails!
In the grocery cart: 1 sucker usually lasts long enough for me to get a week’s worth of groceries!
Mommy: Natalia
We have a swing in the backyard that he loves to swing on. We also have a basketball and hoop in the basement that he LOVES. And a Thomas the Train train track too. These are some of his favorite things we do when his brother’s at school. When he is home, they play together really nicely! Works for me!
Mommy: Tygre
Our six month old LOVES sitting in his chair by the window, blinds up with the sun shining on his face. It keeps him content and occupied if I’m feeding or playing with our daughter. Our daughter entertains him plenty too.
We are also stocked up on musical toys, which both of our kids love. We sing a lot too. Mae’s favorites are Itsy Bitsy Spider, Patty Cake and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. I think we may form a band soon…
Shows (in moderation) are also fun to watch with our daughter. Elmo and the puppets from Baby Einstein are good friends. I might play a show if I need to do dishes or laundry too. If not, I hand Mae a whisk and ask her to cook lunch in her Dora kitchen!
Mommy: Brandy
Since my baby is almost 9, I’ll have to remember a ways back. First, I loved having a stash of cheap plastic containers for them to play with. All of my kids would “cook” while I cooked. Having 3 kids helped keep everyone entertained. I also was involved in a couple mom’s groups, MOPS (Mother’s Of Preschoolers), MOMS Club International,ECFE (Early Childhood Family education), and a Bible study which gave me time to have adult conversation & the kids to play. If we weren’t home, we couldn’t be bored.
Mommy: Amanda
She has quite a few toys which seem to keep her occupied! Otherwise we love going on walks, reading books, playing together, and those sorts of things. Our daughter is almost a year old and kind of walking so we are having fun getting to that new milestone 🙂
Mommy: Emily
My daughter is now 13 months, so our options are opening up! She’s very good at self-play. I give her a pile of books, toys and she’s good to go. But, mostly, she still likes face-to-face time with momma and daddy! I talk and talk to her and she’s the best listener! I talk during meals, I talk in the car. She loves talking with me! For active play, I’ll take her to the park so she can run around. She can’t climb on the equipment yet, but she loves running around and touching everything. And, this week she’s discovered the joy in sliding down the kiddie slide. SO fun!! 🙂

Great ideas! one old standby we used to use a lot was a bucket of water and a paintbrush. Let your toddler “paint” the sidewalk, the driveway, the side of the house– whatever! Fun that never gets old! from Holly

I'd love to do the DVC panel but I'm not sure if you have to click something different to apply.

My budget is pretty low for this item( about $200.00 max). I want an entertainment center that is sturdy enough not to fall apart easily. I guess I would like to know if they make a entertainment center that is made out of real hard wood at this price range?

We are going to be traveling soon and I need additional battery life for our Audiovox portable dvd player. I have seen quite a few external batteries online but am wondering if anyone has an opinion about which one I should get.

You need to correct him every time he goes to climb on the center. When he begins to climb, tell him “Out feet stay on the floor”, or “feet on the floor” and then make sure his feet go back on the floor.
