What is beef and broccoli?
Beef and broccoli dinner is a Chinese dish that uses thin slices of beef, fresh broccoli and a teriyaki type sauce. It is normally served with rice or noodles.
What is Beef and Broccoli Sauce Made of?
Like traditional Chinese beef and broccoli sauce, this sauce is sweet and savory. It is made with spices, seasoning, soy sauce, beef broth, and brown sugar. You add a little cornstarch to thicken the sauce up.
Beef and Broccoli Dinner Ingredients
The great thing about this easy dinner is that the ingredients are fairly common. You should be able to find all of these beef and broccoli ingredients at your local grocery store.
- 3 Tablespoons brown sugar
- 2″ ginger, grated
- 4 cloves garlic, grated
- 4 Tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 Tablespoon cornstarch, or more as needed
- 1 teaspoon pepper, or to taste
- 2 Tablespoons sesame seed oil
- 1 cup beef broth
- Lime juice, to taste
- 3 Tablespoons cooking oil, divided
- 1lb beef strips
- 1 head broccoli, florets chopped off
- Sesame seeds, optional garnish
Ginger – Fresh ginger can be found in the produce section of most grocery stores. You need a small piece of it for this recipe. You can also use powdered ginger here too.
Soy sauce – Feel free to use your favorite soy sauce here. Low sodium soy sauce or coconut aminos are great alternatives as well.
Cornstarch – Cornstarch is used to thicken the sauce and make it thick and delicious.
What Cut of Beef Do You Use?
For this recipe, we used beef strips. These are pre-cut beef strips that we found at our local grocery store.
If you do not want to use pre-cut strips, the most tender beef cuts would be sirloin, try-tip, ribeye, top loin strip, shoulder center, shoulder top blade, shoulder petite tender. All of these can be cut into strips to be used with this recipe.
How Do you Make Beef Tender?
There are several ways you can make your meat more tender. One of the easiest ways I have found is to marinate my meat in something. Once you make the sauce, you could use a little of it to marinate your meat for about 30-minutes.
Additionally, a meat mallet does wonders to make tough cuts more tender. Salt is also your best friend when tenderizing meat.
Remember, cook your meat low and slow once it comes to room temperature.
How to Make Beef and Broccoli Dinner
This meal is super easy to make. In fact, the hardest part is making the sauce. Follow the directions below to first make the sauce and then the rest of your meal.
Step 1
Stir together all sauce ingredients in a medium-sized bowl. Taste and adjust to personal preference. Set aside.
Step 2
Place 2 Tablespoons of oil in a large skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Add the chopped broccoli and saute until lightly browned, stirring occasionally.
Step 3
Remove from skillet. Add remaining oil to the skillet and once hot, add the beef strips. Cook until beef is evenly browned and reaches an internal temperature of at least 135F (will continue to cook in the sauce).
Step 4
Add the broccoli back to the skillet and pour in the sauce. Cook, stirring constantly, for 2-3 minutes until sauce is thickened.
Serve over noodles or rice, with a garnish of sesame seeds.

How to Store Beef and Broccoli Dinner
You can store your beef and broccoli dinner just like you would any other leftovers. Simply put it in a Tupperware bowl and place it in the refrigerator. This dinner will be good for 3-5 days in the fridge.
Can You Freeze It?
If you would like for your dinner to last longer, or if you plan freezer meals, this recipe is a good one to throw in the freezer. I put it in a freezer Ziplock bag. There it can keep 3 to 6 months. I especially like that the flavoring is even better once you freeze it and reheat it. So, this is a great meal to make if you like freezer meals.
