Hello The Grant Life readers! My name is Natalia and I blog over at Ma Nouvelle Mode. I am part of the mommy panel that Kelley has put together and I am here to share one of my labor and delivery stories. I think her idea was just fabulous and I have enjoyed reading them so far. As does everyone, I have a unique story. As a matter of fact, both birth stories are different in their own right, however I am going to share with you the birth story of my second son, Eli. It’s a little different so I thought it might be fun to add it to the mix.
Now my husband plays basketball professionally overseas. We are currently living in France and have been for 3 1/2 years now over a period of 5 years. That’s where it is a little interesting. The period of time that was not spent in France just so happened to be the time I was pregnant with and gave birth to our second son.
You might think that I didn’t want to give birth in another country, on the contrary! I actually preferred it. However, that is not the way it worked out for us. We found out we were pregnant with Eli towards the end of summer. My husband hadn’t signed with a team yet so we didn’t really know what our year would look like. And boy were we right! Here’s a little preview of how it went. I got a job (my husband isn’t American and can’t work yet in the US.), then he signed in Mexico. He played there for a week or two and ended up coming home because the team wasn’t professional. At the airport leaving Mexico, he got a job with a team in the north of France. He came home for the weekend and left for France after that. He played there a month, which was his contact, and then kinda hung around to practice with the team. It made more sense for him to stay so he could get another job. He did and ended up getting picked up by a team in Austria. This is where he ended up finishing his season.
Now as you might have guessed, with all this craziness going on, for one I couldn’t go with him. At this point I was already 7-9 months preggo during this time. And second, he couldn’t leave because he had basically just got there! So I had to do it alone. Now I know I am no super hero and I am most certainly not the first mother to do this, but I have to say it was one of the hardest things I had to do. And I am very independent which says a lot.
The morning I found out they were going to induce me, I got in the car and just cried my eyes out. I was so happy to be done with being pregnant, but so miserable to be without my husband. I called my mom and poor thing couldn’t understand a word I was saying because I was crying so hard! The delivery went great. Thankfully I have very loving and supportive parents who were with my every step of the way, and what about my husband you ask? He was there… on Skype! During the whole delivery, it was great. And funny. Every once in a while I would hear him say “push baby, you got it!” from the computer. The nurses definitely said it was a first.
I know it’s not conventional and most certainly not preferred, but it was us at that moment in our lives and it worked. We will now always have a silly story to tell! Praise the Lord both our boys are healthy, strong and thriving and we are all now living together in France! Thank goodness!

How neat for technology. I remember my first delivery it happened to be take your daughter to work day and the nurse asked if her daughter could come in and watch. Her daughter was in middle school and she was hoping seeing the experience would persuade her against premarital sex. Modesty had all but gone out the window at that point, so I said sure. I have never seen a child more horrified in my life. I hope she remembers that day!

I love that you made the most out of your husband being away during delivery. What a great idea to skype! You will always remember Eli's birth (and so will your hubby!). Beautiful pictures. Congratulations!

Your's is truly a unique story! I can't imagine having to go through labor without my husband, though I know many women have to and before recent decades they all did! How wonderful that you have supportive and available parents… and skype! Eli is gorgeous! I've heard a lot of good things about having a baby in France, but it sounds like everything worked out just fine even though you hadn't made it there yet. 🙂
