The rule in my house growing up was always to eat what had been cooked or else not to eat at all. We were typically hungry, so we ate, and I never understood what it could be like to have really picky eaters in the family. Until my husband's little brother, who was 12, came to stay with us for a while. He wouldn't eat anything I cooked! I found out then that my mother-in-law always makes him a separate meal that he likes to eat rather than have him eat what the rest of the family does. There is no way I would ever do that--but at the same time, it's hard on a kid who has grown up his whole life with that type of treatment and then get stuck with me who is not going to make one meal for my husband and myself and another just for him. So I did try to make more simple, kid friendly foods that he would eat while he was here...but that experience strengthened my resolve to not cater to the whims of my children's tastes in the future, just for the fact that I don't want them to grow up and bother other people with their pickiness.

Oh, and my mom had a rule in our house which I plan on using. We had 1 food we didn't have to eat (my sister and I both chose baked beans) so if we ever said "I don't like that" then we had a choice between baked beans or what was served - we always ate what was served

I find my youngest is pickier than her brother. Thankfully she's young enough that she's not super stubborn... yet. But, as she gets older it will be "this is what we're having for dinner" and if they choose to not eat it (like tonight) than it's in the fridge for them to eat later if they're hungry
